2013 Fake Tan Beauty Awards

Its almost May, the sun is shining and our skin is on show! That means getting golden and looking fabulous.  Natalie tests the best selections of self tan…..

Self Tan

Fake Bake

Colour: I found the colour over all to be very natural and worked with my golden skin tone.  I applied the lotion 2 nights in a row to get a good base. There is a colour guide which gives the instantly tanned look, it’s almost a shame that it washes off because it looks good. The colour guide does transfer to clothing and bed sheets but it washes off. I also I found that even after I had showered and removed the colour guide the self-tanner still rubbed off on my clothes.

Smell: It has a sour, chemical smell but it’s not very strong and once I shower to get rid of the colour guide, it washes off.

Overall: I recommend the lotion and would try it again. As with all self-tanners, it’s a bit of an inconvenience to apply but overall worth it for the colour it gives.  I like the idea of the colour guide to make sure you don’t miss any spots. I would give this product a 3.5 out of 5

St Tropez

Colour: Great colour and I like the mitt that you use along with the mouse as it makes it easier to apply and it doesn’t get all over your hands. It dries fast and produces great colour. I liked to use the Everyday gradual tan along side this product to make the tan last longer. It does rub off on sheets slightly even after showering.

Smell: Not too bad and washes off after a shower.

Overall: I highly recommend this product and it will definately be an addition to my bathroom cabinet. It is quick and relatively mess free. It’s great for people new to self tanning. I would give this product a 4.5 out of 5

Guerlain of Paris

Colour:  Overall color was very natural, a brown color rather than orange and the tan deepened as the hours went on.

Smell: The smell was average like most self-tanners

Overall: I found that the product dried very quickly and could get dressed within 5-10 minutes of application. The product is on the pricey end so I would probably not purchase again. I would give this product a 3 out of 5

L’Oreal Sublime Glow wipes

Colour: Great colour works well with my skin tone. No streaking, watch when applying around wrists and ankles. I found they worked better if I rubbed the towel over my legs first then rest of body. I then went over my wrists, ankles, feet and hands at the end.

Smell: Average

Overall: Fabulous for last minute tanning session before bed. Great coverage and colour. I would use again. 4 out of 5

Jergans Natural Glow

Colour: Very gradual colour development, very subtle and I used the darkest colour.

Smell: Terrible

Overall: An average product for the money. 3 out of 5

Sally Hansen Airbrush

Colour: Great coverage, dries very quickly so spray in sections. It almost creates a ‘veil’ on your legs like you are wearing stockings, which seems to cover imperfections.

Smell: Chemical

Overall: A really great product for a good price. It does feel a little chalky and feels slightly dry on skin. I would give this product 4 out of 5
